Almay - smoky eye kit, for green eyes

Today I was at the hairdresser - shamelessly getting my hair washed and blow-dried due to the fact I broke my recently purchased silver bullet (oops) and couldn't go a day with curly hair. Whilst flicking through a magazine I came across an advertisement for Almay - with Kate Hudson advocating a smoky eye-shadow kit specially for Green Eyes! Having green eyes myself I jumped at the thought of complimentary eye-shadow colours and immediately went to Priceline after to purchase it! (oh! the power of advertising)

Having a Blog gives me the power of writing reviews! So, I thought I'd give it a go! (bare with my lackluster newbie effort!)

This is what the packaging for the kit looks like! You can purchase all the products separately however this great gift pack is a much cheaper ($29.95!) and cuter option - available at Priceline currently! Could even pass as a stocking filler for Christmas!

The back of the box gives you step by step guide on how to apply the smoky eye look. I apologise for the poor photo - I will re write the instructions at the end of this post. However they are super easy to follow!

The inside of the box displays the three products you get in the kit! An 'Almay intense I-colour' eyeliner, an 'intense I-colour smoky-i kit', and an 'intense i-colour' black mascara.

The instructions advise you to prep your eyelid with a concealer to create a smooth canvas to work with - I used my L'oreal super stay concealer. Then, trace the upper lash line with the intense i-colour eye-liner, starting from the inner corner and working towards the outer corner, blending the as you go with the smudge tip of the eye-liner (repeat between the lower lashes and softly smudge).  Once adequately blended, apply the darkest colour eye-shadow to the entire lid - in my case the dark purple/plum colour. Next, apply the lighter middle shade in the crease of your lid, then sweep the shimmery highlighter shade from the crease to the brow bone - blending as you go. The eye-shadow pallet is set out like an eye, so if you are unsure of the colours etc, just follow the packaging - its super easy!

To finish apply a generous coat of Almay mascara (I'm a sucker for giant lashes so I've gone over a few times with my L'oreal Telescopic mascara) and voila! The look smoky eye look is complete!

Trying to show the eye-shadow but looking like I have a lazy eye!

I've never used an Almay product before - have to say I'm rather content with my purchase!

Pros:
  • The colours are easily set out in the product packaging and the instructions are good - simple to follow
  • The colours are true to the pallet; they come out just as you see them in the packet - the gorgeous plum colour is rather intense, therefore you only need one patted on layer. I had to do a little extra blending between the dark plum and lighter grey because the colour created a really stark line on my eyelid
  • The brow bone eye shadow is super sparkly! I love it! (I also used it in the inner corners of my eye)
  • The colours DO actually enhance the natural eye colour (well they did for me!)
  • Its great for people who are bad at choosing eye shadow shades that compliment each other to create smokey eye effect - the pigmentation of pallet is very good. Very easy to apply!

Cons:
  • It's not really a con, but I'm a big believer in liquid eye-liner! So I used very little of the black eye pencil and instead made a sweeping line across my eyelid and winged outer corner with liquid eye-liner. I put some of the plum colour on my bottom water line to even out the top heavy colours.

Important:

  • There is no point to smoky eyes without a defined eye-brow! Definied eyebrows are the way of the future! Get involved with a good eye brow pencil! (I use a Revlon wind up one  - its amazing, I'll do a whole post on it soon!)

Bisous!xx
